Simon Dumont’s 2013 X Games Superpipe Comeback

After hitting the deck at the Winter Dew Tour in Breckenridge during a Switch 7, Simon Dumont didn’t just smash up one wrist, he smashed them both up pretty good, in fact he smashed one of them up so good that the doc said it was in his top 5 worst wrists he’d seen. Upon hearing that news you wouldn’t really expect to see him making an appearance at the X Games Superpipe just 6 weeks later, let alone finish up on the podium.

After getting his wrists bolted back together, like a trooper Simon ploughed on to the X Games in Aspen. But watching him in Day 1 practice, it was clear that he was having a battle with his mind. Watching it brought back haunting memories of that feeling of ‘the fear’, which as most of us probably know is incredibly hard to shake off, especially when you’re riding in the same environment where your injury took place. With his obvious lack of enthusiasm and confidence, it looked like game over for Simon and he even admits himself that it was one of his all time lows of skiing to date. But come Day 2 of practice it seemed both his spirits and pipe runs were picking up and it looked like the old Simon was back. With two dodgy wrists, a load of discomfort, no ski poles and just 6 weeks post surgery, he managed to qualify and go on to place 3rd in the X Games Superpipe final. Pretty impressive hey?
