The name Salomon has been around for a very long time in skiing as well as snowboarding and it’s a sad day to announce that the founder, Georges Salomon, passed away on October 5th, 2010. We know it’s actually been a couple of weeks since his death but we haven’t reported on it yet and felt that it’s only right we should post something.

Georges Salomon was born on Nov. 18th, 1925. His father made saw blades and this was his way into the ski industry. It doesn’t sound like much but this was the perfect beginning. In 1946 he opened and small workshop with his father and after seeing current skiing technology, they started making edges for skis.
By the early 1950s Salomon was designing ski bindings and in 1955 came up with one of the first releasable toe bindings that allowed the ski to be released when you took a slam.

Throughout several decades after that Georges carried on revolutionising ski equipment and was turning over hundreds of millions of Euros by the time the 70s came around. This was also helped by the introduction of clothing, bags and other accessories.

In 1997 the company was sold to Adidas for a reported 1.4 billion dollars before being then sold on to Amer.

Salomon progressed skiing dramatically and the sport owes a lot to this man. We wouldn’t have the bindings we have or the clothing we have but thankfully, we do.
