With some amazing weather, 2011 was setting the European Freeski Open up to be one of the best so far. After last year being let down by the weather and the slopestyle being replaced with a rail comp, I couldn’t wait to see the slopestyle in all its glory. Elias Ambuhl was the firm favourite to win after one hell of a season and being a local boy!
After the semiefinals, Elias was in third but he then decided that third was not the place he wanted! In the superfinals he threw down a 270 disaster, alley-oop 180 on the pipe 360 out, 270 on pretzl 270 out, switch lipslide to misty 450 off in the rail section.
On the kickers he went with a left dub cork 10, right bio 900 reverse mute and a switch double cork 12 mute! He nailed an 86.33 for this run putting him a clear 6 points ahead of Roy Kittler in second. Roy didn’t want his third place in the Austrian Freeski Open 2011 to come back and haunt him so he needed to show his top form to cement the silver. He sent out a switch 270 on pretzl 270 off, switch 180 on 180 out, 270 on switch up 270 out, switch right 1080 tail, switch left 900 mute and a cork 900 tail. A pretty decent run leaving Oscar Scherlin to pick up third place.

The women’s finals were dominated by the Swedish contingent in Laax with 18 year old Emma Dahlstrom winning the first big international title in her career. However, the big shout out has to go to Katie Summerhayes! This British hopeful managed to land third place in the women’s slopestyle but as she’s only 15, it’s a result that will only help her career and British skiing!
