A couple of months back we reported on the FIS attempting to include half-pipe and slopestyle for skiing along with a number of other disciplines. If you didn’t read it, click here to take a look.
They’ve had another meeting and the result isn’t the best. But it’s also not the worst. OK, so the IOC has said, “I think we would characterize it to say that the executive board is looking favourably on all of those for inclusion.” That’s great… right?
This all boils down to your opinion of the Winter Olympics, the IOC and the sport in general. Governing bodies like this are notorious for taking their time to deliberate something whilst sipping on a mojito on an 18-30 holiday. In the grand scheme of things, introducing ski slopestyle will do wonders for the sport. It’s consistently growing in popularity and with the amount of comps there are worldwide at the moment, it can only help to progress. I wouldn’t be worried about other competitions being hurt by this as the Winter Olympics is only once every four years but I will say that some comps will suffer in the year of the Olympics.
The decision has been delayed (and it will more than likely be delayed again) until 2011 when an ‘official’ decision shall be announced. But as they said, it’s favourable.
